Technical meteorologist's term for mixed snow, sleet, and rain.

We got 1-2" of snow overnight, churned into slush and splattering around, with residue slumping off the cars and generally ugly. Now raining, to make the mess degenerate still further. Everything winter-related in the economy gone to hell -- even winter logging, because the ground turns to mud when it should be frozen.

Emergency teams fished another snowmobiler out of a lake over the weekend, guy now in the hospital with severe hypothermia. My inner grump* would say to let Darwin have his way, except for the pollution questions involved...

Bright spot of the morning -- a swarm of chickadees offering advice and running commentary while I cleared slush off my car.

*Always listen to your inner grump.

It all counts as income for the rescue crews, and it's a change from little old ladies with difficulty breathing, which appears to be this winter's two-for-one special item. The snowmobilers who go into the lakes at least aren't usually as badly-racked-up as the ones who run head-on into trees. The classic injury from that one is a double femur fracture plus a concussion. (There's a reason the local ambulance squad refers to northbound cars pulling snowmobile trailers as "trauma on the hoof.")

Pulling on a survival suit and dog-paddling through a hundred yards of slush with a rope around your waist looks like a hard way to earn beer money...

...but then, so does digging clams. A friend of ours lists her occupation as "economic survival specialist."

Just rain down here. Lot's of rain. Maybe snow on wednesday.
By the by, did I mention that I really enjoyed "Dragon's Teeth"?

Glad you liked it. Now run out and buy more as gifts...

More seriously, I think rain in Durham is probably good for Younger Son. He's trapped in his apartment grinding out 10,000 words* of academic prose over the course of three days, for his "Specialty Exam II" -- nice weather would just get in the way.

*That's 10K _without_ counting citations.

Well there should be snow on the way. It's traditional for us to have a really messy snowstorm just before opening the dining halls so that our freshly cleaned (and in one case this year freshly installed) floors get properly baptized with slush, sand and salt.
