Bike ride?
Oct. 24th, 2008 08:39 amAnother bright and sunshiny fall day, blazing colors on the trees, woodsmoke in the air. With temperatures below freezing . . .
Weather prophets seem to think we'll get up over 50 F today. If that doesn't come with free added wind, I may get out and get those miles. Stay tuned for potential roadkill/no-roadkill news!

Minor puzzlement
Oct. 24th, 2008 10:50 amOkay, what is a "Christian Cafe"?
I mean, I understand Kosher and Halal and even Seventh-Day Adventist vegetarian as a restaurant basis, but I'm not aware of any generic Christian dietary restrictions. Except no-booze for some and "long pig", for most . . .
(Probably just means "Jesus Rock" on the sound system.)

Friday roadkill report
Oct. 24th, 2008 02:59 pmA couple of flat garter snakes. That's all. They probably thought they'd found this nice warm rock in the sun . . .
Roadkill retrospective:
Since this may well be the last bike ride of the season, I summarize the survey. Less total roadkill than in past years, higher percentage of porcupines (although that may represent preferential scavenging of less-pointy snacks), considerably lower percentage of skunks. Raccoons, woodchucks, muskrats, and UFOs represented in about normal proportions. One 'possum, first ever. No deer.
Temperature soared above 50 F and the wind stayed down, so I added my green fuzzy to the bike attire and headed out. Many trees now bare. Some asters still blooming, milkweed pods exploding in fluff, most of the tamaracks turned to gold. Windrows of acorns under some oaks -- expect to see bloated squirrels hauling themselves slowly across the grass to sanctuary. Falling out of trees. Whatever.
May get another ride in, may not. Time to start considering whether the world owes me a new pair of skis for the winter.
15.32 miles, 1:12:23
1314 odometer miles for the year, something over 100 hours on the two bikes.

Beware, ye hosts of Darkness . . .
Oct. 24th, 2008 10:17 pmWent out for my evening yard and sky check before locking up, and spotted an owl cruising along in the streetlight glare over Parkview.
Probably barred owl rather than great horned (positive ID under the circumstances difficult) so less danger to our kitty friends. Still, a reminder that the night has talons . . .
