Still cold

Subzero again this morning, after a pathetic effort by yesterday's sun that propelled us to maybe positive 2 on the degrees F scale...

Less windy, though. We'll take it.

The DSL modem, our current Hajj, has checked out of Massachusetts and headed for Maine. No record of it being scanned in. Delivery still alleged to be today. No notification of "service ready" from the good folks at Verizon, as yet. Do I sense a trend here, one that will leave us regretting our choice? Some of the other local options were dis-recommended by folks in a position to know...

May attempt to enter actual work on the new iMac today. Still think I'll dump the "Mighty Mouse" in favor of a standard two-button trackball. Have swapped in the one I use with the laptop, and the Mac doesn't seem to care which it sees. Also downloaded a test photo or two from our digital camera, no sweat, no drivers needed, etc. Next up, attempting to receive a fax via the USB modem, and connecting the old inkjet all-in-one. Don't know if the Mac will recognize that as a scanner as well as a printer, and the driver disk I have for _that_ one dates back to OS 9. Somehow, I don't think that will help.

I mentioned the existence of real, honest, good news on the publishing front a little while back. Minor, but still good. The Nice Agent Lady sent along a sub-rights offer for another French edition of SUMMER COUNTRY, mass-market paperback this time, and says the deal is firm enough to see the light of day.

Not a big whoop, but MONEY FOR THE AUTHOR! none the less. Money I don't even have to work for. And I'd figured that the French edition had sunk without a trace, whereas this implies that they sold at least a couple of copies.

May this be a trend...

The setup package came via stealth UPS this evening, with the activation email earlier in the day. I have installed. I have much faster internet. I have even received a test email on our new address.

Let us see what we shall see. I have a deep and innate distrust of Verizon, I have to admit...
