Still cold

Subzero again this morning, after a pathetic effort by yesterday's sun that propelled us to maybe positive 2 on the degrees F scale...

Less windy, though. We'll take it.

The DSL modem, our current Hajj, has checked out of Massachusetts and headed for Maine. No record of it being scanned in. Delivery still alleged to be today. No notification of "service ready" from the good folks at Verizon, as yet. Do I sense a trend here, one that will leave us regretting our choice? Some of the other local options were dis-recommended by folks in a position to know...

May attempt to enter actual work on the new iMac today. Still think I'll dump the "Mighty Mouse" in favor of a standard two-button trackball. Have swapped in the one I use with the laptop, and the Mac doesn't seem to care which it sees. Also downloaded a test photo or two from our digital camera, no sweat, no drivers needed, etc. Next up, attempting to receive a fax via the USB modem, and connecting the old inkjet all-in-one. Don't know if the Mac will recognize that as a scanner as well as a printer, and the driver disk I have for _that_ one dates back to OS 9. Somehow, I don't think that will help.

Our DSL equipment arrived a couple of days before we got the "service ready" nod, back when we first started with broadband.

You can spend the intervening time making certain that you have a firewall set up (or enabled, if it came with one out of the box) on your computer.

The Mac OS firewall is already set up, is alleged to be adequate, and I set it to "stealth" mode, in which it doesn't even admit to the presence of a computer if pinged by the network. We'll see. Elder Son may help with configuring everything. He's a professional, don't try this at home, etc.

The PC (laptop only -- no network card on the desktop machine) runs Zone Alarm's free version.

The only thing the new Intel iMacs don't do is Classic Mac stuff. I maintain an old iBook for that.

Manufacturer may very well have driver at website for the all-in-one. My all-in-one is ancient but was still able to attach to new Mac. Just downloaded a driver, installed and printed, scanned etc.

I haven't been impressed with Verizon. I've heard horror stories (even starred in one) about most of the local ISP's.. but Verizon seems to be the worst.

Best of luck with them, though!

Well, I am now connected via Verizon DSL, installed pretty much on the step-by-step instructions and CD that came with the setup package. We shall see what we shall see. I know Elder Son has few good things to say about a couple of the local ISPs, including the one that now has our dial-up.

And yes, this means we got the "service ready" and "installation package" today.
