Time for my twice-yearly rant on fiddling with God's Own Time. Spring ahead, fall back, all that crap. Which means that tomorrow, sunset will hit us before 5:00 PM. Maine belongs on Atlantic Time, along with New Brunswick and that mythical land of Nova Scotia. No, we shouldn't be in the same time zone as frigging Detroit. Daylight Savings Time just makes the clocks a closer match to the sun.

Meanwhile, 'tain't fit night out for man nor beast. Winds still gusting up over 40 mph (one of the capes logged over 70) with copious rain -- like 3" measured in some areas. Don't know about the flooding status.

Just finished resetting all the clocks. Which means we will lose power tonight, and I will waken to blinking displays all around. Three of our six TV stations are off the air...

We have, as previously noted, had considerable wind lately. Serious portions of Maine's voting public are currently without power. Enough so that we are inviting Canadian linemen over to help with the aftermath. I have ranted before on the subject of the interrelated life in border states.

Now, my question for the PTBs is this -- in future such situations, are said Canadian linemen going to have to present passports in order to cross the border? Are US linemen (returning the favor) going to have to have passports to come home again?

Note to aspiring quiz contestants -- these questions also apply to fire and ambulance services...

***Okay, now LJ is playing wonky with the clock again, insisting that this entry is backdated. Don't blame me if the fabric of space-time gets a little tattered in this journal.

Still here

In spite of the best efforts of Maine weather, we weathered the storm. Still windy today, but partly cloudy and with bold new vistas where there had been leaves on the trees. Our sideyard maple, for example, stands naked to all passing eyes.

Will probably spend some time cleaning up the yard -- dead twigs and small limbs, what my late mother used to call free pruning service, plus bits of trash and plastic bags imported from three or four blocks over. I note some plastic bins that seem to have migrated down the street...

Not my problem. No bits of the house missing, and only a few water-stains on the wallpaper where the wind drove rain up-slope on the roof, under shingles and flashing. The usual suspects, in every case.

Have also weathered a minor domestic storm -- got a phone call yesterday, Wife's father was in the hospital with pneumonia. As he is 88 years old, with a bad heart, this sets all sorts of dire thoughts flitting through the fertile imagination. However, a further call last night informs us that he has been discharged, that apparently they dumped the right antibiotics into his bloodstream in the right quantities, and get him to hell out and home before he catches some kind of drug-resistant _other_ bug in the hospital...

ETA: No matter what LiveJournal may think, the current time is _not_ 2:15 PM. My clocks suggest 9:28 AM. So it isn't just a time zone glitch.
