Gray day, temperature almost up to freezing at noon, suggestion of snow later. Smell of birch and maple smoke in the air from folks firing up all those woodstoves in hopes of disappointing Saudi oil sheiks....

Also sound of sirens in the distance, perhaps heading toward the chimney fires caused by people reclaiming disused woodstoves. Have I ever told you folks about the classic case of someone who did that very thing, only to call 911 because his house filled up with smoke? Turned out he was lucky, didn't set the place on fire. But he'd never noticed that some previous owner had discontinued that chimney, knocked it down and patched the hole in the roof, and the flue now terminated in the attic.

(Subject title is a Stone Ponies reference, for those of you old enough.)

Where was it? I read about it maybe 2 years ago...someone had set fire to their roof (fireplace), the fire department rushed out, put it out, but while they were doing that, their own fire department caught fire (dumbasses) and after they left the guy's house, they missed a spot in the attic which flared up hours later and burned the house down.
Honestly, if today's man can't handle the intricacies of fire, something the lowly caveman mastered, then I think evolution needs to winnow out that particular family tree.

Linda Rhondstadt and the Stone Ponies. Oh yeah.

I went to high school with Linda's cousin Bob. Got to meet herself a few times at parties. Very nice girl. Liked that I didn't treat her like a goddess.
