jhetleyGray day, temperature almost up to freezing at noon, suggestion of snow later. Smell of birch and maple smoke in the air from folks firing up all those woodstoves in hopes of disappointing Saudi oil sheiks....
Also sound of sirens in the distance, perhaps heading toward the chimney fires caused by people reclaiming disused woodstoves. Have I ever told you folks about the classic case of someone who did that very thing, only to call 911 because his house filled up with smoke? Turned out he was lucky, didn't set the place on fire. But he'd never noticed that some previous owner had discontinued that chimney, knocked it down and patched the hole in the roof, and the flue now terminated in the attic.
