I underestimated that sinkhole when I said "VW Bug." Once the city started playing with it, the hole looks more like "UPS Van" size. The city engineer bossing the cast of thousands says the old cisterns are 25' across, full width of the pavement. I'd guess 10' to 12' deep.

Date: 2005-05-03 04:03 pm (UTC)Yeesh. I grew up in the sticks, and we had fireholes (artificial ponds) scattered about where there weren't enough natural ponds - but that's something else again. (And I'll bet those cisterns make great breeding grounds for mosquitos...)
