The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street

I underestimated that sinkhole when I said "VW Bug." Once the city started playing with it, the hole looks more like "UPS Van" size. The city engineer bossing the cast of thousands says the old cisterns are 25' across, full width of the pavement. I'd guess 10' to 12' deep.

The cisterns are in the street?

Yeesh. I grew up in the sticks, and we had fireholes (artificial ponds) scattered about where there weren't enough natural ponds - but that's something else again. (And I'll bet those cisterns make great breeding grounds for mosquitos...)

Under the street, actually. I am in what Maine would call "urban." Our house occupies more than half of a 60'x120' lot, with our front porch about two feet from the front lot line. The street is the only place they _could_ put those cisterns.

Mosquitos? How could you tell the difference? Oh, I get it -- you're thinking of the _small_ mosquitos, the ones that don't require radar transponders and FAA registration....
