Roadkill du jour, a muskrat on the road 'twixt here and the mall, whence I had gone in hopes of finding that F&SF issue for the writerly archives. No joy, Borders having already shelved the May mini-tome.
Okay, so call me slow. Last night, on my way back from the hospital, I finally noticed that opposums are about the same color as old tar and thus are hard to see against the road. That's why they (and grey squirrels) get picked off so often.
For the record - I did not hit the critter who inspired this revelation.
Well, squirrels get squashed so often because there are so many of them. Plus, they're, well, squirrels. Squirrelly.
With possums, it's a bit more complicated. First, the average possum (Pogo excepted) isn't very bright. Second, by instinct they face a predator rather than run away. This works poorly with automobiles. Skunks and porcupines suffer from the same mis-applied defensive strategy.
Speaking of Roadkill...
