The state version.

Well, because the sovereign State of Maine uses different calculations for some of the esoterica (such as dividends), we end up owing the damned governor many pesos. At least I don't _think_ we owe penalties as well....

Windy today, cold (10 F), and no fresh snow, but I went out skiing anyway. Those tax calculations make a minor case of frostbite seem attractive -- even add luster to death by hypothermia. Idiots had been tromping, (and walking incontinent dogs) all over the trail at the City Forest, so I gave up on the rough ice after about fifty feet and decamped to the University Forest, where they had run the trail groomer to at least break up the surface a bit. Some parts of the system were even good. Still declined to try that big hill, though. I may be a fool, but I'm not a _damned_ fool.

1.5 hrs, 5 miles approx.

Heh. Today I worked up a sweat just taking a mile walk; it's 74 degrees and sunny enough to require sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. I always wonder why all the people walking around holding up hands to try and see, or like the lady I saw today, a coat to try and keep the sun off her a bit, don't just break down and wear a hat.

Of course, I get LOTS of odd looks for wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat when I'm outside. I don't care; this way I don't wind up getting light-headed from the sun baking my brains.

Oh, and no state sales tax - just some whopping property taxes.

Er, state INCOME tax. There is a sales tax of 4%, and a local tax of 2.25 more.

Oh, we have state income tax, state sales tax, and local property taxes out the whatever. Maine ranks at or near the top of "most taxed" lists on a perennial per-capita basis. A poor and sparsely-populated state, trying to keep up a "liberal" facade inspired by Boston millionaires....

But we have lots of rocks and trees.
