We will not contribute to the National Day of Shopping.  Neither of us actually enjoys shopping, even for something we want or need.  Add to that an abhorrence of crowds in general and elbows in particular, plus extreme traffic-avoidance behavior, and you have a formula for us staying out of stores until mid-January . . .

I think the mall area performed a greater service to humanity when it was still a dairy farm.

In the Louisville of my boyhood what is now a giant mall was Oxmoor Farm -- where one of the delights of spring was to watch steeplechasing from our car window as we sped by on our way to a pediatrician's appointment downtown. I suppose one could go today and watch people chasing instead -- but somehow it hasn't quite the panache...

Dunno. Depends on _what_ is chasing the people.

Do you suppose you could arrange a bulk discount deal with the Pied Piper of Hamelin for some rats? There's a tower in the middle of the Rhine River, I`m told, where a certain Bishop Hatto would be delighted to -er- pursue the acquaintanceship of shoppers who have been run off their feet...

You can go behind the mall and under the interstate to the new golf course and watch the steeplechase there. I never have--once up close before the mall was built was enough--but it's quite possible.

And it was prettier, too, that dairy farm.

Depends on which way the wind was blowing.

The only shopping I will be doing today is that of the grocery variety.... Which was put off until today since I was outta town for Thanksgiving.

Groceries get an exemption from the shopping ban -- besides, you don't have to go into the mall to get them. But Wife will probably switch her allegiance to the Hannaford across the river for the duration, where less general mayhem prevails.

I did two bits of shopping this morning. On-line with free shipping. I am going to the grocery store in a few minutes to buy ingredients for "my" variant of fruitcake and fallback chocolate to fill the baskets I ordered to fill for people at work (in case I don't get around or am not able to engage in the traditional baking frenzy)

Are you aware of Buy Nothing Day (http://www.adbusters.org/campaigns/bnd)?

I think that's been around for a number of years. We follow their gospel . . . religiously.

It has indeed. My wife [livejournal.com profile] sandykidd and I have been observing it for several years.

I hadn't intended to do any shopping today. But I was poking around the Borders website and discovered that it was cheaper to buy a 4-season set of NUMB3RS than to buy each season individually -- and since I'd been planning to buy another copy of season 1 anyhow as a gift for a friend, this was a way to solve 2 problems at once. At least I didn't have to go to the mall. :-)

I hope they deliver the goods before Borders goes into bankruptcy . . .

*blink* First reaction: WTF is that all about?

Googling "Borders bankruptcy" brings up some 6-month-old speculation about whether some "activist investor" might be planning to run them into bankruptcy in order to merge them with B&N, and nothing more recent. I think I'm not going to worry about getting my order.

Oh, one of your fellow Texans keeps running a Borders Deathwatch. He's been wondering if they'll even make it to Xmas. Username txtriffidranch or (defunct) sclerotic_rings. I'm not placing bets.

I start trying to avoid stores as soon as they start up with their Christmas stuff. The earlier they start in on the Christmas music and decorations, they longer the time period where I try to stay away. They're not influencing me to buy more by trying to start the Christmas season at Halloween.

We hear you. Wife had to go into a store, a couple of weeks back when it *should* have been safe. Got assaulted by "Jingle Bell Rock" at the door and nearly turned on her heel and left . . .
