Dead kitty by the side of the road this morning, nobody I knew.  Not a stray -- collar.

Maybe somebody tried a Wall Street experiment?

Anyway, beware of falling financiers.  I'm finding "wait it out" as fiscal advice . . . stressful.  Most of you dear readers are further from retirement than we are.

I moved all my 401k funds into the money market fund option this week. It's the only one that hasn't been in free fall since late September. If you can do something similar it might add to your peace of mind.

For the first time in my life, I actually feel ... relieved ... that I have absolutely no investments, and that I've been banking with a credit union for lo, these many years.

It's not that my financial position vis a vis retirement is any better than it ever was - but at least it's not worse.

Problem is, with self-employment I get no pension . . .

Oh, I'm not recommending my brand of fiscal irresponsibility. Just noting my surprise at how much it's keeping me from stressing out.

My father retired two years ago, my mother's retiring at the beginning of 2010, and both of my parents-in-law are in their mid-seventies. I can afford to wait, seeing as how I have a quarter-century to go before I can retire, but I worry to death about all four of them. If there's any schadenfreude to be had anywhere around here, it's with the thought of the various hipsters I've known, including the Czarina's ex-husband, who were salivating in hope of their parents' demise. Between the stock market crash and reverse mortgages, a lot of Portland scum are going to be in for a real surprise when they attend the reading of the will and discover that they're stuck for the funeral expenses.
