Temperatures above freezing, so that's okay. But we are heading back to bare ground, which is bad for critters that count on snow-cover for winter safety. How'd you like to be a snowshoe hare in your bright new winter coat, white standing out like a sore thumb to any passing hawk?

We'll do our traditional New Year at 0000 GMT tonight, tuning my 1941 shortwave radio to the BBC for the chimes of Big Ben. Whee! Haven't stayed up to midnight local to celebrate in maybe thirty years. Old fogeys.

Did two more chapters of the revisions this morning, up to page 104 in the manuscript. Alice is feeling gloomy, with music to match. Sibelius in this case, to be followed by the Brahms Requiem.

If you like soundtrack-style music, I can recommend any of Christopher Franke's Babylon 5 albums for a good dose of dark. And if techno-rock is acceptable, Sisters of Mercy's "Floodlands" is terrific -- I've always envisioned it as the potential soundtrack for a Neil Gaiman "Sandman" movie!
