Okay, it being a beautiful day in the neighborhood, I decided to walk down to the library.  Save gas, dump that book that was aggravating me, get some others less obnoxious.  I'm old enough, I don't have to finish books.  There will not be a test.

And the library is closed.  Switched to "summer hours" this week, daytime only, and only weekdays.  Whatever stupid kind of library closes when people have extra free time?

(Yeah, they've been doing it forever.  Doesn't mean I have to like it.)

Dumped book in "night deposit" slot and walked back.  At least it was a beautiful day.

that's why I quit using my local library too - stupid office hours! ok for children and those without a job, not so good for those of us who also work office hours and have to travel to and from work on top of that.

Unfortunately, this is not just a local library, it is _the_ library. Yeah, there's one in the town across the river. About a tenth the size...

Do ME libraries allow you to check books out from any library in the same county or do you have to pay to get a library card for a different library?

Pitt County in NC let you get one library card and use it at every library in Pitt County. Hertford County made you get a library card for each library in the county BUT you didn't have to pay for any of them. There's a library system in NH that covers Manchester, Salem, Hudson and I forget which other towns but not more than another 2, IIRR that let you borrow from those libraries with your town library card. Here in Gilford we can only borrow from Gilford's library unless we want to go through the hassle of inter-library loan. It's nuts. It would take me all of 10 minutes to go over to Laconia's library and borrow a book but I can't do that unless I plunk down $50 a year for a Laconia library card. Or I can wait a week for inter-library loan to bring me the book.

We can, in theory, get a book from any library in the state through interlibrary loan. Many long years ago, we took out books from the library across the river, but I can't remember if we had a separate card for that.

The university library used to require a separate card. Don't know if they've changed policy.

Other than those, the libraries are tiny -- some of them one or two rooms. As I've commented before, this is the largest "city" in any direction for a hundred miles.

Eep! I'm glad the library here is more reasonable about hours. (Though with the latest vote going against funding, don't know how long that will last.)

I'm old enough, I don't have to finish books.

It's taken me *forever* to learn that.
