One dead moose by the side of the Maine Turnpike.  I guess that offsets, in sheer biological mass, all the bare roads I have been lamenting from my bike rides.  Also six or ten squashed woodchucks, a porcupine, and possible otter and fox.

We hauled ourselves off to watch the Universitas confer the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology on Younger Son, with all the rights, privileges, and honors pertaining thereto.  Along with Cecil B. DeMille's proverbial cast of thousands.  At least the circus ringmaster only called out the doctorates by name, settling for summoning up lesser demons by classification.

I've had enough Elgar for a few years now, thanks.  And certain people shouldn't be encouraged to sing certain songs.

And now, having been up since 3:00 AM, it's time to wave bye-bye...

I wonder what's left of whatever hit the moose.

Can't be a pretty sight -- even with panic braking, probable speed at impact greater than 50 mph. And even young moose weigh 500 pounds or more...

Didn't get a good look at the corpse. I was driving 70 myself, and lighting was false dawn.

Further non-news update -- I haven't seen any mention of the accident in either Saturday/Sunday paper or this morning's, which implies Bullwinkle got hit by a truck rather than a car.

Do the truckstops up there offer little moose stencils so the truckers can keep track of how many moose they've hit?

Not that I know of. The (formerly) Maine Central Railroad and (formerly) Bangor and Aroostook Railroad used to have a small wager down on which rail line would bag the most moose in a given year...I think the CPRail folks were banned for professionalism. Or maybe steroids.

Yes, but how was the food?
Over twenty years on campus and I've never once had to work graduation. They'll probably try to make me do it next year, when my daughter - hopefully - will be graduating.

And congratulations to your doctor the son.

My initial understanding of the planned lunch was wrong -- we went to "Acorns" instead of the official Universitas function. Food was yummy and plentiful. Although Younger Son was disappointed that they ran out of mousse before we hit the dessert line...
