Okay, just noticed (well, Wife just noticed, and called my attention to the fact) that some supreme idiot in the administration at Younger Son's university scheduled graduation for Memorial Day weekend.  Which leaves us sharing the highway down and back with Major Tourist Traffic.

Oh, well, maybe the high gas prices will make everyone else stay home.

Sunny today, temperatures predicted to reach around 60 F, but winds gusting up to 25 or 30 mph.  Maybe bike ride, maybe not.

Same at the day-job. This is supposed to be a Good Thing, since Working Parents won't have to take off work in order to see The Kid graduate.

"supposed" -- isn't that the brand of support socks for varicose veins?

Combining the...(supply invective of your choice) traffic...of mass graduation with heavy holiday traffic is supposed to be a Good Thing? Traffic up at UMaine backs out onto the interstate and down to the next exit. I know. I was there, for the undergrad performance.

Also means that hotel/motel rooms are booked up the previous fall, so you can't use that dodge to avoid traffic. (Doctoral program schedules are malleable -- we weren't sure Younger Son would be getting his degree this month until a few weeks back.)

Okay, traffic hellishness. For comparison, my son's high school graduation is on Father's Day. Couldn't have it on Saturday before? No, has to be on father's day. Okay, not a huge holiday and at least we get a new tie to wear to the graduation, but ...

Universities can generate graduation traffic hell all by themselves. They don't have to invite major travel holidays in on the fun.

Heck, Durham is traffic hell whenever UNH is in session. It's a farm town by nature and design and fitting in 15,000 odd students, teachers and assorted employees to a town that should hold a tenth that ...
