Awake at 3:00 AM, gave up and got up before 4:00. Around here, that is first light. Quiet, birds waking up, no skunks.

Coffee.

And I think I've figured out how to graft those three buildings together. The differing floor elevations have been giving me fits, with four floors of one end not quite equalling three floors of the middle. Now we'll hear from the owner about how the plan doesn't meet his objectives, from the contractor about how he can't cut walls and floor structure like that, and from Code Enforcement about how that doesn't _really_ meet the exiting requirements....

But the alternatives look worse.

And today's probably silly question is:

I know tht there are building code requirements for how you get OUT of a building (mostly because of fire regulations, which is why doors on public buildings open outwards) but to your knowledge, other than ramps for the handicapped for public buildings, are there any ENTERING requirements?

Mostly, how you get _into_ a building is up to you. Handicap access applies only to public places (for varying values of "public" because the ADA doesn't apply to religious structures. Even hospitals or nursing homes run by churches....) Handicap access involves more than ramps, you might remember. Door opening force, lever hardware, door width, clearances all around, et cetera et cetera et cetera.

Zoning regulations or deed covenants may apply to a particular building or site. Likewise state or municipal design guidelines may govern design of certain kinds of buildings, such as schools or housing funded by agencies, and they are only "guidelines" to the extent you can forego government funding. But these are not building codes. Oh, no.

Lots of fun places to spend your client's time (and money.)

Despite looking like a duck, and sounding like a duck, and having these webbed feet ...

Cheer up, you could be dealing with Ancient Lights as well!
