Apparently there are people in this world who take offense when someone holds a public door open for them.  Me, my momma raised me to believe that is basic courtesy.

Some people live to get offended at things.

That. You remove one source of offense, they won't be happy until they find another. The only thing I can figure out is it's some kind of twisted self-validation thing. For some reason, they don't feel whole unless they can convince themselves they're being offended or insulted in some manner.

An internet acquaintance refers to them as "offense kleptomaniacs." Doesn't take much of that to end up on my "they never will be missed" list.

That's just wrong.

I met my second girlfriend in college by holding the door open for her on the way to class. But I'd still do it even if I'd never been rewarded for the practice.

That is basic courtesy. Anyone who makes a fuss about it is the one being rude. Hell, I hold doors for people all the time!

Yeah, strangely enough there are people like that.

Even stranger, some of 'em are of the male persuasion. At least, visibly.

Strangest - they'll get offended when you hold the door BECAUSE they're carrying a heavy, bulky load that would make it nigh impossible to open the door for themselves.

Never can figure out my fellow human beings. And I don't think it can ALL be attributed to 'engineers aren't good at people' either.

Oh the full hands upset because you held the door? That's because they are "man" enough to get the door and juggle the heavy, bulky load at the same time. You implied they weren't when you held the door.

I can figure them out, I just can't pick out from a crowd which one is which.

My momma raised me the same way, whether I'm the door-holder or the lady with my hands full of packages. It's too bad you got snipped at for a courteous gesture.
