Well, Younger Son reports a successful defense of his dissertation. Now I have to decide whether to refer to him as Doctor Younger Son or Younger Son, PhD.
(Actually, the institution where he got the degree probably has its own local custom in the matter, and you might as well go with that. Penn, where I got my degree, went with the "FirstName LastName, Ph.D." format when the degree was mentioned at all . . . most of the time, drawing attention to it that way was regarded as somewhat infra dig.)
