I'm failing.

I paid less than that for a couple of new cars...

Y'know, I think it's a way of keeping score, the same way star athletes ask for ever more money in their contracts. If you can tell your friends in the locker room who are into that sort of conspicuous consumption that you've scored the $5000 gal, there's prestige of a sort. (Not that I share that value set, but I know there are some men who have it. They buy the Lambourghini rather than the Vauxhall just because it costs more.)
