I realize this has been discussed elsewhere, but...

Leonard Cohen?  Rock?

No.

One of the many reasons why I appreciated the Britcom The Young Ones was that one of the ongoing gags was the presentation of Leonard Cohen and Cliff Richard as "alternative" or "edgy". I still crack up every time I hear the line "We'll be dead, and still alive, like Leonard Cohen!"

"I have seen the future of rock and roll and it is not Leonard Cohen."

Leonard Cohen, at his induction into the R&R Hall of Fame

Perhaps he's as bemused as the rest of us. I'm still glad he got some recognition, though.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I think he's a great song-writer. (Just so-so as a musician or singer...)

But not rock. No beat.

I had wondered about that, until I started remembering how much of his music has penetrated the rock genre. A few years ago there was a UK Punk tribute CD of Cohen music. And a rock tribute cd in the US. He may have been..well, himself as a man apart. But his music has had a tremendous influence on rock music over the years.
