Well, Mittens (of comfy squirrel fame) has gone missing -- neighbors have a wanted poster or two out on the telephone poles. And Nikita has been wandering around, looking, looking, looking. He came over this morning, meowed at me, didn't want ears scritched, and then started sniffing at various strategic corners of the house and other olfactory signposts. "Where's my friend?"

Mittens was never a very satisfactory cat from our point of view, scared of us (for no known reason -- I can give chin rubs with the best of them...) and inclined to take the occasional house finch from the feeder. And a total waste of fur when it came to chasing squirrels. But we'll miss him.

Such is the hazardous life of an indoor/outdoor cat. Don't know whether he ran afoul of a car, a great horned owl, or a coyote. Fishers also figure on the list, around here. RIP, one stripey gray cat with white bib and paws.

My condolences - no matter how aloof they are, when you lose one, there's a cat shaped hole in the heart. Extra skritches and comfort for Nikita ...

Aloof, yes. And I'm not accustomed to "aloof" cats -- total feline strangers come up to me on the sidewalk and start polishing my ankles. Apparently I emit some kind of cat-friendly vibe. Or else I look like somebody who will OPEN THAT DOOR!
