Okay, the iMac is talking to my HP all-in-one again. No physical changes. Just turning both off overnight served as a "time out" -- who knew that parenting skills would apply to computers...
I've known for years that Standard Troubleshooting Technique Number One for anything wrong with Microsoft-based software is "reboot the machine". I should have guessed it might apply to MacOS as well.
I enhanced my reputation for technical wizardry by suggesting that trick to friends -- who also, oddly enough, have an HP all-in-one. It only took a few minutes -- I think it's something to do with capacitors discharging.
My desktop, on the other hand, regularly fails to talk to its own hard drive if it's connected to the hub with the printer and external drives at boot time; when that happens, I have to unplug it from the wall for a couple of minutes as well as disconnecting the offending devices before it will condescend to boot.
