Well, the battery specialty store had an appropriate number right on the shelf.  We now have three functioning backup power systems, for two normally-used computers (the laptop doesn't count, having its own built-in rescue).  Maybe the nature center needs a donation?

But this absolves me from dumping hazardous waste into the disposal system.

Did the store relieve you of the old battery?

(Must remember to speak to someone at work about suitably disposing of the dead UPS that is currently keeping the live one off the floor.)

There's always the APC TradeUPS program, which will accept (almost) any old UPS for a discount on a new APC. The shipping cost may more than counter the discount, especially if you are trading in several old, heavy, and low capacity batteries, but depending on where you are it may be cheaper than local proper disposal. Obviously, since the discount is percentage based, this makes the best sense when what you are getting is a heavy duty server-grade device.

I suspect our IT guys must have some system in place -- they deal with enough of the things -- but for some reason they never got around to taking the dead one away. If it turns out they don't, I'll mention this.

(Sorry, this ended up the wrong place first time.)

Yes. They have to take the old one and recycle it.

Your "work" people should be able to replace a dead battery -- depending on brand, most "professional grade" UPS boxes have separate battery compartments, so you don't have to stick your fingers into hot circuits. Simple "Plug and Play" swap. This particular version did not go to that extra expense. Me, I know enough electronics to survive the operation.

I thought that was what they were going to do, but instead they swapped out the whole unit and left the new one sitting on top of the old one. Maybe they will eventually retrieve and re-battery the old box, but I should remind them it's there.
