Well, I just checked the BBC World Service site for broadcast frequencies, and as far as I can tell, we will not be ringing in the GMT New Year's with the chimes of Big Ben on my ancient Hallicrafters.

The BBC, of all people, should have more respect for tradition.

Anyway, happy GMT/UCT New Year's, folks.  No way are we staying up for the local time zone version.

They've gone rather high-tech on us North Americans. Plenty of satellite and cable radio options, along with streaming Internet audio (which was my preferred method), but no shortwave.

On the other hand, those big shortwave transmitters do cost a fair amount to run. Can't blame the Beeb for trying to save a few quid here and there ...
