Winter driving tips (regarding previous post)

The main rule of winter driving is, "Slow the hell down."  Secondary rule would be, "If in doubt, don't."  Few winter road conditions wouldn't be covered by one or the other rule.

The other thing to remember, if you have a big-ass SUV with momentum out the wazoo, is that four-wheel or all-wheel drive doesn't help your brakes a damn bit...

(Anti-lock braking is a lovely innovation, on the other hand.  Buy it.)

That. Next time I switch cars, I'm aiming for a Volvo XC70 — car stance, car ride, car fuel economy, SUV cargo capacity, AWD, ABS and traction control.

I was always amused (and frustrated) when living in Spokane by all the cowboy wannabees in their Jeeps and their jacked-up monster 4x4s, who apparently thought the First Law of Winter Driving is "Shit, I have four-wheel-drive, I can go ANYWHERE, dude." It never seemed to occur to any of them that they couldn't steer or stop any better than anybody else (and frequently worse, since many of them labored under the misapprehension that 40" gumbo mudders make perfectly good snow/ice tires).
