I've seen a bunch of discussion of Norman Mailer's sins, including his attempt to murder one of his many wives.  (Serial polygamy, I believe, rather than parallel, but I could be wrong...)

Anyway, it boils down to "Norman Mailer was a shit who wrote well."

You could say that about a lot of authors, including several in the SFF genre, living and dead.
