Yesterday's rain has turned into black ice on roads and back steps.  Sun should remedy shortly.

Appears that the sovereign voters of Maine, in their infinite wisdom, have refused the Indians' attempt to set up a slot machine parlor on the Canadian border.  This despite the White Folks already running one in Bangor.  I note with some wry amusement that the CasinosNO! group is based in Portland, about as far as you can get from the Passamaquoddy Tribal Poverty Pocket and still remain in Maine...

Maine voters also vetoed a proposal to extend "term limits" from a maximum of eight consecutive years to twelve.  Me, I'm in favor of execution of office-holders at the end of  term, sorta like the Old Ways.

As an occassional casino gambler, I am constantly amazed that any state would say that the one armed bandits are preferable to table games. They are easily rigged, and just plain a waste of money at the best of times. I've watched people in wheelchairs on oxygen sit, glassy-eyed, pumping their disability checks away, a dollar at a time. They are soulless.

According to the books I've read, statistically, Blackjack offers the best chance of winning, although the odds are still in the house's favor. But at least you get to have a good time with actual humans as you win and lose.

Maine voters also vetoed a proposal to extend "term limits" from a maximum of eight consecutive years to twelve. I think the voters should decide, not arbitrary limits. People like Olympia Snowe, Mitchell, and Cohen are the best arguments against limits I can think of.

As far as casinos/racinos go, I don't have a dog in that fight. I have an acute understanding of the principle that "The house always wins" and don't get much thrill out of betting on things I can't control.

Term limits? That was a "John Martin Law" when it passed -- get that Eagle Lake bastard out of the way, and maybe Portland can do what _it_ wants...

Should add -- rather than "easily rigged", I'd say "inherently rigged". The payout rate is set to legal formula.
