Autumn in New England

jhetleyTangential comment in mrissa's journal this morning, the savory delight of autumn in the north country. We have three seasons of autumn, really, with September, October, and November presenting different faces. Right now we are in anticipation-autumn, with cool days and the first leaves turning and the first killing frost. October will be high-autumn, frost most nights and peak color and apple cider. November can be Indian Summer or pre-winter snow and freeze, bare trees, an earthy damp smell in the woods and blaze-orange even if you don't hunt.
Winter alternates brutal and beautiful, dark brooding silences and vicious storms. Spring barely happens, mud season and then explosion of growth. Summer heat and humidity and bugs.
