Computers are supposed to give the same output from the exact same input every time, right?  So I went back to the Continental Airlines web site and ran through the procedures for a "OnePass" frequent-flyer card, to attempt to recoup at least some benefit from our late tribulations and the probability of multiple future excursions to Wife's ancestral home.  Her parents are not doing well, and we anticipate the same kind of shuttle I suffered for a while to Atlanta and my mother's decline.

I ran through the application once before, with no result.

This time it worked.

I could swear I entered exactly the same information in each blank.  Got the same error message asking me for "Zip plus 4" on the mailing address, where I only entered the 5-digit zip code.  Etc, etc, etc, to quote Yul Brynner.

You answered your own question. They're supposed to. But they don't.

And often they work better for some people and much much worse for others.
