Just like the old Soviet interrogation techniques perfected by Iron Felix. "Give them hope, then take it away," Felix said. He obviously could have managed the Red Sox if he hadn't been busy with the KGB.

Derzhinsky? (Spelling?) I thought he was NKVD or OGPU or some other alphabet soup, pre KGB. But I can't keep them straight, and gave my copies of THE GULAG ARCHIPELAGO to the local library.

I think you're right about the NKVD. Your spelling of his last name looks about right.
