Not even squashed squirrels.  Maybe I used up my biomass quota with that long drive yesterday?

Weather is supposed to turn beastly hot (read "90 F") tomorrow and Wednesday, so I carpe'd my diem and headed out on the bike.  Botany sidelight -- the orange hawkweed was blooming profusely in southern reaches of the state, while it is just getting started up here.  Thus can you drive through the seasons.

I've been seeing a cedar waxwing foraging at the same front yard on my bike ride, several times now.  Heard the distinctive "bzeep" call in the trees, also.  I suspect a fledgling family, just as we suspect a catbird nest near our house.  Have seen a catbird in hunter/gatherer mode almost every day.

15.31 miles, 1:05:54*

*odd coincidence -- that's the exact time, to the second, of another recent ride.  Considering the vagaries of traffic, traffic signals, wind direction and speed, and the precise track I take around curves, I think it worthy of note.

I'm not sure if I ran over a squirrel or not this morning. I thought I did from the bump but I looked in my rearview mirror and it was still running for the side of the road. The chipmunk, like on Friday, made it safely across the road 2 seconds before my car got to that section.

One defense maneuver of squirrels -- when attacked, some of them will jump straight up. That "bump" may have been the bushy-tailed rat bouncing off your undercarriage without major injury.
