I note that our neighbors to the south and west have decided against mandatory seat-belt usage laws.

New license plate motto:  "Live Free and Die"?

Can't come up with a snappy connection to the parallel approval of gender-optional civil unions.  Working on it.

Frankly, I approve.

I personally will not get into a car without putting on a seat belt, any more than I'll get onto a motorcycle without putting on a helmet. But I figure every time someone who didn't dies, the average intelligence of the human race goes up by a tiny fraction.

There's that, and the general nanny-state irritation. I think _most_ nanny-state laws lower the bottom of the gene pool.

I concur. What's more, they encourage dependence and a sense of entitlement.

I've never been a fan of mandantory seat belt laws (at least for adults.. kids are a whole other story).

I always wear my seat belt yes. But it's my conscious choice of whether or not to take that extra safty measure. If someone else doesn't want to fine. They're risking their life (unlike, say, driving drunk). Whether or not they are wearing their seat belt doesn't really impact my safety (unless, I suppose, they're flying body hits me.. but the odds are likely pretty low of that).

So yeah, that's my stance. It's like the government telling me to wear a coat in the winter or something.....

Well, the lack of a seat-belt law in New Hampshire is nothing new; the only thing newsworthy in a particular year is how wide or narrow a margin the proposed law gets voted down by.

As far as civil unions go, I suspect that the "a person's private life is a person's private life" conservatives finally outnumbered the "camel's nose inside the tent/one step away from the destruction of home and the family" conservatives by enough to tip the balance in the State House. Besides, this way our Episcopal bishop can make an honest man of his long-time partner.

(It was really amusing watching the Manchester Union Leader trying to come up with a position on the Bishop Robinson story. They didn't know whether to be shocked down to their conservative socks at the thought of a gay bishop, or deeply pissed off and protective at the thought of a bunch of people who weren't even from New Hampshire trying to tell New Hampshire's Episcopalians what they could and couldn't do.)

Isn't living in the granite-headed state wonderful? Pleased with the civil unions. Unconcerned about seat-belts for adults. The whole point of being an adult is making your own choices - responsibly. Thus, I wear my seat belt and so does everyone else in my car - As the driver, I am responsible.

Gay Bishop? Who cares? His business. Manchester Onion Loader? Not nearly as much fun since Willy Leob (sp?) died.
