Sap weather

Sunny days above freezing, nights down into the 20s F or lower, sun rising higher in the sky each day. Today is Maine Maple Sunday, where you can drive out to the local sugar grove, smell sweet steam rolling sticky off the boiler, and sample maple sugar, maple candy, maple syrup on snow...

Well, I wouldn't recommend the last -- we don't have fresh snow. Stick to ice cream.

Anyway, it's time to tap your maple trees and think of spring.

And in other springy news, we have a crocus bud that may open today -- it's scrinched tight against the foundation, where we never planted it. Migratory plants alarm me just a little.

Sounds wonderful. I've never been to New England but am determined to get there someday soon.

Do you have squirrels? They have been known to move bulbs around.

(I miss crocuses. Down here we have cactus flowers instead.)

Oh, we have squirrels. Squirrels in abundance, actually, two kinds. Or three, if you count chipmunks.

But I prefer migratory plants. More mystery in the world, you know.

Envious sigh... maple sugar.

I love maple sugar, and maple candy in small quantities. I just hate how hard it is to get it. Last Christmas, they had plenty of "Maple sugar (flavored) candy", many of which didn't even have maple sugar as the first ingredient.

We've had trouble finding _pure_ maple candy, even here in maple-land. And while a dab or two of cream in the mix doesn't degrade quality of the final product, adding more than half cane sugar certainly does...
