I'll tell you, I'm feeling very lucky to have unloaded [a number of] shares of Honeywell yesterday. My mutual funds still took a beating today, but at least I have the funds from the HON sale sitting safe in money market funds right now. I don't think we've seen the end of the slide either.
Far from it, in my guess. I believe Greenspan - by the end of the year, maybe sooner, we'll be in full-scale recession. I'm short and getting shorter on stocks - or going overseas - but I am still really worried about my dismal employment picture.
On the other hand, I'm getting really used to scraping by, so I can probably come up with some way to at least keep groceries on the table.
We aren't panicking yet, even though we're going to need our retirement account long before you will. I work on the theory that if I buy a stock or fund, I intend to still hold it ten years from now.
I'm not inclined to panic, but my usual investment cycle is more along the 3-5 year stretch. I'm just beginning to have enough piled up to move some into index funds with lower fees and such.
It isn't a matter of needing it to me, as much as it is just learning the ropes and trying to do well - or at least, somewhat well.
