I believe the technical term for our current windchill condition is "Yikes!"

We have also reached the point where this 1850 hulk we call home has serious stratification. As in, downstairs cold, upstairs warm. Guess where we are?

You've got one of those, too?

We're going for the compartmentalization approach, ourselves. That, and multiple layers of fleecy and/or quilted garments. (I have a Penguin Books poster over my desk that's a reproduction of Holbein's painting of Erasmus in his study. I know that winter has really arrived when I look at the outfit he's wearing and say to myself, "I want a copy of that for me.")

Shirt, knit sweater, Bean's chamois overshirt. Fleece is good. I have a pair of REI fleece overpants -- think they are marketed for mountaineering expeditions rather than old-house survival. Shows how little _they_ know.

I really need to get either a pair of overpants or just some nice lined pants for days like today. Even sitting around the house, my legs get cold. I'm quite good at layering the torso, though. Even have a silk 'thermal' shirt.. and mmmmmm is that warm with some layers. Toasty. Now for my legs....
