Hope you all still have at least half your wood and half your hay.

Groundhogs remain pretty much irrelevant to the duration of a Maine winter. We will have at _least_ six more weeks of winter, regardless. And any self-respecting woodchuck ain't gonna wake up for the festivities anyway. Going by the pawprints in the dusting of snow on our driveway, though, we had a skunk pass through last night.

"Warmer" this morning, the quotes because that means +10 F rather than -10, but the weather folks continue to prognosticate gloom and doom for more of that Imperial Canadian Infiltrator Air after Saturday.

Up until a couple of years ago we heated the house with wood -- we had a wood-burning furnace in the basement, and forced hot air ductwork -- and I remember all too well how after a certain point in midwinter I would find myself looking uneasily each day from the woodpile to the snowdrifts and back again.
