Whether 'tis nobler to weather the slings and arrows of outrageous Zephyr or turn into a rutabaga.

Or have we left rutabagas behind, in moving from alt.callahans to a new venue? Do we need a new iconic vegetable?

Anyway, about 2 F this morning, -17 C, and less wind. Although our house still shivers with the occasional gust. I may yet manage another ski outing. Since the last snowfall included some freezing rain, I would do the city forest loop widdershins rather than sunwise -- the latter involves a downhill turn that gets dicey on cross-country skis and ice. For those in the audience who only know downhill skiing, cross-country skis do not have metal edges.

Some attractive frost patterns on our windows this morning, feathers and curly fern fronds and arrow-straight sequoias in miniature. Also a line that zipped along vertically for about six inches and then degenerated into short-track doodles.

And 'tis a poor spellcheck that does not recognize "widdershins." Or "'tis," for that matter.

Stalking the Iconic Vegetable

Dot and arrow, egg and dart:
each division of the heart
hears its 'tis' crossed at the start.
Dots and arrows... pheasant's feet?
Egg and dart... the cops' defeat?
Aubergine... an inn? An art?
Plaster ceilings sealing part
of heaven off for window seat?
Or sticking plaster for the street-
abraded knee? Choose horse or cart
and put one first, and one to end,
for rutabagas have no friend.

But our house has no egg-and-dart. Or ornamental plasterwork of any kind. And cracked plaster seals but poorly.

The mirror crack'd from edge to edge?

We'll always have rutabagas.
