Chopped up an onion for the "Spanish" rice and my eyes still smart and my nose is running. Don't usually have this violent a reaction. Fresh spring harvest?
Possibly, if you get onions from the same source. But if you buy them, what you get is largely random. The soil type in addition to plant type determines how much sulfur an onion absorbs and thus how fumey it can be. I've had "sweet" onions that were ghastly.
