No roadkill because I wasn't biking on the road. Did see one squashed shrew and a vulture circling with intent.

Proving once again that I am an Entitled American Male, I drove 100 miles down and back to bike 25 miles on the carriage trails at earthquake central. (Our local national park, Richter either 3.4 or 4.2 last night, depending on who you ask.) Beautiful day, temperatures in the low 60s, little wind. Not much "foliage" there yet, just some yellow from the early birches and aspens and the red of swamp maples. But much of the forest is spruce and pine, anyway. Carpet of tan pine needles on the trail, though, lots of mushrooms and pillows of happy happy moss off to the sides (wet summer, remember), glorious views out over ponds and mountains and the bay. Circumnavigated one mountain and a couple of lakes in the process.

I _would_ prefer not sharing the trails with horses, though. Or rather, with horsey end-products. The horses themselves seemed well-behaved.

25 miles +/-, 2.5 hours

ADDENDUM: Evening news now says Richter 3.9. Make up your effing _minds_, people...

We are so used to the delays and adjustments, usually downwards, that we make betting pools. When the earth is still we holler, "What was that?"
