One dead porcupine, very neat, on the hill leading up out of the bog.

Did _not_ institute a game of phone tag this morning early, so I was able to get out for my bike ride before the clouds broke up. Still humid, still came back just about as wet as if I'd been riding in the rain, but not nearly as hot as it will be later. And no thunderstorms yet.

Got another critique on SIGNATURES yesterday (thanks, Catja!) and now must decide what parts of it to ignore (sorry, Catja!). Part of that decision comes down to the "It's not a bug, it's a feature" argument -- detective noir fiction has a different set of conventions than fantasy, and while this book _is_ fantasy, I've shoved it firmly into the other set of genre conventions. Nice Agent Lady seems impressed with the "voice", for example, a distinct change from my previous work.

Once I dump the racist language, that is.

I dislike things racist, but if the character should be speaking that way, that's the way he should be speaking.

I personally find things politically correct and the political corrections officers to be far more offensive than the things they like to censor whitewash improve.

I can see it appealing to readers outside genre, it very much had that feel. I think it's good to gather reactions - the only person you need to listen to is your editor...

Well, there's the "What I tell you three times is true" effect. You, Michael Grant, and my agent all told me that I had too many climaxes at the end. Michael decided that he liked them, after due consideration, but the preponderance of the evidence...

The ferry ride is gone.
