Novice in control

Just had a red-breasted nuthatch at our thistle feeder, new bird in our feeder watch. Didn't know how to operate it, as it is not suited for upside-down birds. We have the seed-ball, which the white-breasted nuthatches know how to use, but this newcomer didn't seem to recognize it as a food source.
