March of the chainsaws
Sep. 20th, 2023 09:54 amCrew now dismantling a large oak a couple of houses up on our side street. Tree probably 50 years old and 2'-3' through at the trunk. I didn't notice anything large out of that tree from our last storm. I suspect this is clearing the sky for a solar-electric installation the owners put on the roof last spring.
Squirrels gonna be pissed.

Wednesday migratory report
Sep. 20th, 2023 03:33 pm30-40 geese at the cemetery pond when I headed out, plus indeterminate ducks. Flocks gathering. I don't recommend walking there, either.
Roadkill limited to a possible red squirrel too flat for positive ID, plus garter snake equally flat but I could still see the stripes.
Rode upriver and then inland and back through the bog, red maples all turned and a lot of the leaves down. Asters everywhere, goldenrod, and some diehard chicory/cornflower. Dodging acorns and apples in the road. Did not die. Ride takes me over 800 miles for the year. 900 may be possible, 1000 not.
