Thursday cruel nature report
Aug. 24th, 2023 03:46 pmComing back past the cemetery on my bike, I first counted a couple of ducks on one side of the pond and then puzzled over a shape on the far shore. About 20 yards further on, I sorted the parts into a blue heron. With a frog leg dangling from each side of its beak. Great blue herons will eat anything they can catch and swallow . . .
No other roadkill or wildlife to report. Floral department, the "fall dandelions" are contesting the roadside yellow division against goldenrod and tansy. Purple division winner is the loosestrife, dammit. More of the small white asters. Also, the thistles are going to fluff, including a couple of the bull thistles which I don't think I've reported before. These are the classic Scottish heraldry thistles. Not that I'm accusing Scots of importing the seeds to bedevil English farmers . . .
Got out on the bike, upriver and inland and back through the bog. Warm out there, 80 F when I got home. Did not die.
