To ski or not to ski, that is the question...

Whether 'tis nobler to weather the slings and arrows of outrageous Zephyr or turn into a rutabaga.

Or have we left rutabagas behind, in moving from alt.callahans to a new venue? Do we need a new iconic vegetable?

Anyway, about 2 F this morning, -17 C, and less wind. Although our house still shivers with the occasional gust. I may yet manage another ski outing. Since the last snowfall included some freezing rain, I would do the city forest loop widdershins rather than sunwise -- the latter involves a downhill turn that gets dicey on cross-country skis and ice. For those in the audience who only know downhill skiing, cross-country skis do not have metal edges.

Some attractive frost patterns on our windows this morning, feathers and curly fern fronds and arrow-straight sequoias in miniature. Also a line that zipped along vertically for about six inches and then degenerated into short-track doodles.

And 'tis a poor spellcheck that does not recognize "widdershins." Or "'tis," for that matter.

That feels better

Any exercise addict can tell you -- those fatigue endorphins are good shit.

Got out to the city forest, did the widdershins thing, weather clear and track fast. Fast enough that I did the four mile loop in under an hour, even out of shape and only the third ski outing of the season.

Popular destination. The parking lot was full when I got there, managed to snag a space as someone else left. When I got back to the car, folks had parked along the access road and all around the traffic circle at the entry. I guess I'm not the only one crawling the walls with a NEED to get out and ski.

Now I can go off and play couch rutabaga in front of some TV football games.
