Inadequate ballot

I noticed a distinct lack when I did my "advanced ballot" the other day. Seems that "None of the above" didn't submit enough nominating petition signatures for any of the races.

I think I'll do a legal name change and run for office.

"Vote for None of the Above."

Got a certain ring to it, yes?

(I'm old enough to remember the "Vote 'No' for president!" campaign in Nixon versus Humphrey.)

Wednesday Roadkill Report

Yes! Roadkill! Just when you thought it was safe!

One dead yearling raccoon, out near the entry to the city forest.

We warmed up to nearly 60 F this afternoon, so I snatched another bike ride from the jaws of winter. This brings me to approximately 1600 miles for the year, a satisfactory number even if paltry to dedicated cyclists like Mr. Riddle or Ms. Bray. I suspect that this represents The End. Time to wax up the skis.

The recent wind and rain stripped almost all the leaves, even the oaks and beeches --those can hold on to their leaves, brown and yellow respectively, all through winter, some years. Tamaracks have turned to Aldo Leopold's smoky gold, declaring hunting season open.

And water was up over the road in the bog, flowing in a sheet about a hundred feet wide and half an inch deep. Spring conditions, almost. I managed to time my passage so as to avoid cars and therefore a drenching.

The times, they are a changing

We attended (command performance) a "do" last week for the retirement of a nice lady at the nature center, Wife's site of occasional employment. This was a pot-luck supper, with various and sundry goodies brought by the attendees.

And I was struck dumb by the percentage of "store-bought" stuff supplied, like even cookies and brownies and pies.

Way back when I was a lad, a woman would prefer to appear naked at such an occasion than to bring in "boughten" cookies.

Not arguing that Today's Woman doesn't have more important ways to spend her time, just observing a change in society...
