New England weather

One chunk of the storm front that blew past a couple of days back has been officially designated an F-1 tornado. Trees uprooted, houses damaged, a greenhouse scattered in shards across the landscape. No deaths or injuries reported.

No, this didn't come anywhere near _us_ personally.

Usually the NWS checks things out and says "microburst" or the like. This time, we made the big leagues.

_May_ get a chance at another ride today, if the clouds hold off long enough for the world to warm up. In the 40s F outside right now.

Sunday roadkill report

A couple of tattered muskrat remnants about six miles apart, a skunk, two raccoons. One of the raccoons appeared to have dragged itself thirty or forty feet from point of impact before dying. Folks, if you are going out hunting with your F-150, make sure of your kill... Also, one area of distinct dead smell heavy enough for a deer, but no corpse sighted.

We still had sun this morning -- clouded over now -- so I headed out on the bike again even though I needed my fleece vest at the start. Have to get those miles in. Rode upriver to the next town, crossed the Bridge of Death without incident, and back down the other side to pass Elder Son's abode, noting _his_ bicycle parked. Lazy brat.

Windy. More trees changing, but still only maybe 30% color except in wet areas. River level down a bit from wet summer highs, but still above average for fall.

Noticed something on the bridge abutment that I hadn't quite picked up before -- once upon a time, someone poured concrete walls along the river edge, erosion protection. They'd poured _around_ timber cribbing already in place, which has now rotted away and the concrete split with subsequent freezing, so that you can see perfect Pompeii hollows of the phantom logs.

I wonder what archaeologist a thousand years hence will think of that -- MOTEL OF THE MYSTERIES time?
