About that many kids tromping up our front steps* to panhandle for candy this evening. We ran out and shut the show down before 7:00 PM. Some damnfool columnist listed our street as one of the Prime Gimmee Spots. May the Bane Sidhe sing under his window.

*Front steps made hazardous by the city's removing the sidewalk and by other side-effects, intended or otherwise, of The Sewer Project From Hell.

I do not understand -- have never understood -- why columnists write columns like that. As if any kid is truly deprived on Halloween these days? Give me a break!

I don't mean that there are no deprived children in the world on October 31 of each year, of course. Just that the ones who have access to newspaper columns about biggest Halloween hauls are highly unlikely to fall into that category.

We had people come in from Massachusetts for trick or treating in our complex. I was astounded.
