Lest we get too smug about past administrations, the US has been using drone strike assassinations for years. Two that come to mind are a Taliban leader killed in Pakistan and an Al Qaeda cleric in Yemen. The latter was a US citizen . . .

Not feeling smug, but rather worried. Neither of those two was as far up the food chain ranks as the late, wrongly-lamented Mr. Suleimani was.

Oh, I'm worried. I just keep seeing posts about how our past, more virtuous, leaders did not do these things. When our moral and upright Mr. Carter was prepared to use AC-130 gunships for crowd control in that failed hostage rescue . . .

If there's one thing guaranteed about the US presidency, it's that anyone who attains it - no matter how nobly-intended they may be on arrival - will leave it a war criminal. They won't get a choice, save perhaps in whether or not they can make it less necessary for the next person and to what degree.
